Dry vs dehydrated: what's the difference?

Dry skin is a skin type: it produces less oil, and tends to feel rough or flaky year-round. Dehydrated skin is a skin state: it lacks water, not oil — which means even oily and combination skin can be dehydrated. That is why some people experience shine and tightness at the same time.

What causes dehydration?

Air-conditioning and heating, which pull moisture from the air (and your skin)
Over-cleansing, harsh foaming cleansers or very hot showers
Queensland sun and wind exposure without protection
Too many active ingredients at once without barrier support
General factors — caffeine, alcohol, low water intake, travel and poor sleep

How to rebuild hydration at home

A hydrating routine does not need to be complicated. Four steps, done consistently, make the biggest difference:

\nCleanse gently. Choose a calming, non-stripping cleanser — if your skin feels squeaky-tight afterwards, it is too harsh.
\nLayer a hydrating serum on damp skin. Look for multiple weights of hyaluronic acid with Vitamin B5 — applying to slightly damp skin helps draw water in.
\nSeal it in. A moisturiser suited to your skin type stops that hydration evaporating. Richer creams for dry skin, lightweight lotions if you are oil-prone.
