Why Does My Skin Feel Dehydrated? (And What Actually Helps)

If your skin feels tight after cleansing, looks a little flat by mid-afternoon, or shows fine lines that seem to appear and disappear with the weather — you may be dealing with dehydration, not dryness. They are often confused, but they are not the same thing.

Dry vs dehydrated: what's the difference?

Dry skin is a skin type: it produces less oil, and tends to feel rough or flaky year-round. Dehydrated skin is a skin state: it lacks water, not oil — which means even oily and combination skin can be dehydrated. That is why some people experience shine and tightness at the same time.

What causes dehydration?

  • Air-conditioning and heating, which pull moisture from the air (and your skin)
  • Over-cleansing, harsh foaming cleansers or very hot showers
  • Queensland sun and wind exposure without protection
  • Too many active ingredients at once without barrier support
  • General factors — caffeine, alcohol, low water intake, travel and poor sleep

How to rebuild hydration at home

A hydrating routine does not need to be complicated. Four steps, done consistently, make the biggest difference:

  1. Cleanse gently. Choose a calming, non-stripping cleanser — if your skin feels squeaky-tight afterwards, it is too harsh.
  2. Layer a hydrating serum on damp skin. Look for multiple weights of hyaluronic acid with Vitamin B5 — applying to slightly damp skin helps draw water in.
  3. Seal it in. A moisturiser suited to your skin type stops that hydration evaporating. Richer creams for dry skin, lightweight lotions if you are oil-prone.
  4. Protect every morning. Daily SPF50 protects both your hydration work and your skin's long-term health.

When in-clinic treatments can help

If your skin stays dull and thirsty despite a consistent routine, an in-clinic skin-quality treatment may help support deeper, longer-lasting hydration — our Korean Glass Facial page explains one popular option. Every treatment starts with an individual consultation where our registered practitioner assesses what is actually going on with your skin and whether treatment is suitable for you. Results vary between individuals.
