Most people worry about the wrong thing after a chemical peel. They brace for dramatic shedding that often never comes, then undo the result in week one with an exfoliant they forgot they were using. Here is what genuinely happens, day by day, and the short list of things that matter.

Not every peel makes you peel

A peel works by using acids to loosen the bonds between dead surface cells, prompting the skin to renew itself more quickly. Depending on the strength and the acid used, that can mean visible flaking around day three — or almost nothing visible at all.

Light, hydrating peels often produce no shedding whatsoever. That is not a failed treatment. The work is happening at a level you cannot see, and the amount you flake is a poor guide to how well a peel has worked.

What the first week usually looks like

\nDay 0. Skin can look flushed and feel tight or slightly warm. Some peels leave a temporary bronzed or matte appearance.
\nDays 1–2. Tightness peaks. Skin may feel rough or papery before anything visibly lifts.
\nDays 3–5. If flaking is going to happen, this is when — usually around the mouth, nose and chin first, where skin is most mobile.
\nDays 5–7. Flaking settles. Skin often looks brighter and feels smoother.

Depth, acid type and your own skin all change this timeline, and results vary between individuals.

\n\n

The rules that actually matter

\nDo not pick, peel or help it along. Pulling at skin that has not released on its own is the most reliable way to cause pigmentation or a scar from an otherwise routine treatment. Let it shed when it is ready.
\nStop all other exfoliation. No scrubs, no cleansing brushes, no acids, no retinoids — typically for five to seven days, or as advised at your appointment. This is where most people trip up, usually with a product they use so habitually they have stopped noticing it.
\nMoisturise more than feels necessary. A plain barrier-repair moisturiser, as often as the skin asks for it. Comfortable skin sheds more evenly.
\nSPF50+ every day, without negotiation. Freshly resurfaced skin has less protection than usual, and Queensland sun will find it. Sun exposure in the week after a peel is the main cause of post-treatment pigmentation — the exact problem many people had the peel to address.
\nSkip heat and sweat for 48 hours. Saunas, hot yoga, steam and vigorous exercise all increase flushing and irritation.
\nHold off on makeup for at least 24 hours where you can, and use something light and non-occlusive after that.

Things worth ringing us about

Uncomfortable tightness, mild flaking and a few days of pinkness are all expected. Blistering, skin that stays hot and painful, spreading redness or anything that looks like infection is not — contact the clinic rather than waiting it out.

Why peels are planned as a course

A single peel gives you a visible freshen-up. Changing something more established — texture, congestion, the look of uneven tone — generally takes a planned series, spaced to let the skin fully recover between visits. Going harder or more often is not the shortcut it appears to be; irritated skin that never gets to settle tends to look worse, not better.

Between appointments, a simple routine does more than an ambitious one. Cleanse gently, moisturise, protect from the sun, and reintroduce your actives slowly once the skin has calmed.

When in-clinic care helps

If you are peeling constantly at home and still not seeing a change in texture or tone, the issue is often too much exfoliation rather than too little. Where congestion and breakouts are the main concern, acne treatment may be the better route, and for texture and scarring we would usually discuss skin needling instead.
