The day after a laser hair removal session does more for your result than anything else you will do that month. The treatment has done its work; what happens next is mostly about leaving your skin alone and keeping it out of the sun. Here is what actually matters, in the order it matters.

What is happening to your skin right now

Laser and IPL work by targeting pigment in the hair follicle and converting light into heat. That heat is what disables the follicle — and it is also why your skin feels warm and looks a little pink afterwards. Mild redness and small raised bumps around each follicle are a normal, expected response, and they usually settle within a few hours to a couple of days.

Your skin has just been through a controlled heat injury. It is not damaged, but it is temporarily more reactive than usual, and it is considerably more vulnerable to sun.

\n\n

The first 24 hours

\nCool it, gently. A cool compress or a cool (not cold) shower helps with the warmth. Skip ice directly on the skin.
\nKeep it clean and bare. Rinse with lukewarm water and a gentle, non-foaming cleanser. No scrubs, no exfoliating mitts, no loofahs.
\nMoisturise simply. A plain, fragrance-free moisturiser is ideal. This is not the day for actives.
\nAvoid heat. No saunas, spas, hot yoga, or long hot showers for at least 48 hours. Heat prolongs the redness and can increase irritation.
\nSkip the gym. Sweat on freshly treated skin is a common cause of follicle irritation. Give it a day.
\nNo deodorant on treated underarms for 24 hours, and no fake tan anywhere on the treated area.

The first two weeks

\nSun protection is not optional. Treated skin burns more easily and is far more likely to develop patchy pigmentation after sun exposure. In Queensland this is the single most important instruction on this page — cover up, and use a broad-spectrum SPF50+ daily on any exposed treated area.
\nNo sunbeds, ever, and no deliberate tanning between sessions.
\nPause retinoids and acids on the treated area for about five days, or as advised at your appointment.
\nDo not wax, pluck or thread. These remove the follicle the laser needs to target and will set your course back. Shaving between sessions is fine and is what we recommend.
\nSwimming — leave chlorinated pools and the ocean for 48 hours.

The shedding phase catches people out

Somewhere between five days and three weeks after a session, treated hairs begin to push out and shed. It can look exactly like regrowth, and many people assume the treatment has not worked. It usually has — the hair is being expelled, not growing.

Gently exfoliating with a soft washcloth after the first week can help the process along. Resist the urge to tweeze anything that looks stubborn.

When to contact the clinic

Get in touch if you notice blistering, crusting, skin that stays hot and painful beyond 48 hours, or any sign of infection. These are uncommon, but they are worth a conversation rather than a wait-and-see.

How many sessions, realistically

Hair grows in cycles, and a laser session only affects follicles that are actively growing at that moment. That is why a course spaced several weeks apart is needed rather than a single visit. Hair colour, skin tone, the area treated and hormonal factors all influence how someone responds, and results vary between individuals — which is exactly what a consultation and patch test are for.

When in-clinic care helps

If you are getting persistent irritation, ingrown hairs or patchy pigmentation between sessions, that is worth raising rather than managing alone.
