You have an IPL session to fade pigmentation, and two days later the spots look darker and more obvious than before you started. This is the single most common worry we hear after a first treatment — and it is usually a sign the treatment is doing precisely what it should.

\n\n

Why pigment darkens first

Intense pulsed light targets pigment in the skin and delivers energy to it as heat. The pigment does not vanish on contact. It is damaged, drawn toward the surface, and then shed as the skin renews itself.

During that journey, treated spots typically become darker and sharper-edged — many people describe them as looking like coffee grounds or freckles that have suddenly come into focus. Over roughly seven to fourteen days they flake away with the surface skin, taking the pigment with them.

So the darkening is the treatment working, not a reaction against it. It is worth knowing before you book, because it can be alarming if nobody has mentioned it.

The timeline most people follow

\nDay 0. Warmth and mild redness, often with slight swelling around treated spots.
\nDays 1–3. Pigment darkens and comes into sharper definition. This is the stage people ring us about.
\nDays 4–10. The darkened pigment begins to flake and lift, usually gradually rather than all at once.
\nDays 10–14. Most surface pigment has shed. Skin generally looks clearer and more even.

Deeper pigment takes longer and often needs a series. How your skin responds depends on the type of pigmentation, your skin tone and how much sun exposure you have had, and results vary between individuals.

\n\n

What to do while it clears

\nLeave the flaking alone. Do not scrub, pick or exfoliate the darkened spots off. Removing pigment before the skin is ready is a reliable way to create a new mark where the old one was.
\nSPF50+ daily, without exception. This matters more after IPL than after almost anything else we do. Sun exposure on freshly treated skin can trigger new pigmentation and undo the result you have just paid for. In Queensland that means a hat and shade as well as sunscreen.
\nNo sunbeds and no fake tan before or between sessions.
\nPause retinoids and acids for about five days, or as advised at your appointment.
\nKeep it simple and hydrated. Gentle cleanser, plain moisturiser, nothing ambitious for a week.
\nSkip heat — saunas, hot yoga and long hot showers — for 48 hours.

When to contact the clinic

Blistering, crusting, skin that stays hot and painful beyond 48 hours, or pigment that darkens and then clearly worsens rather than shedding are all worth a call. So is any new pigmentation appearing in an untreated area. These are uncommon, but they should be looked at rather than waited out.

\n\n

Why a patch test is not a formality

IPL targets pigment, which means it does not suit every skin tone, and it responds differently to recently tanned skin. A patch test and an individual assessment are how we establish whether it is appropriate for you and at what setting — they are the part of the process that keeps it safe, not paperwork.

Some pigmentation also is not suited to light-based treatment at all. Melasma in particular can worsen with heat, and it usually needs a different approach.

If pigmentation keeps returning, the treatment is only half the answer — daily sun protection and a considered routine do the other half.
