How to Use a Microcurrent + LED Device: Your 5-Minute Routine

Buying a microcurrent + LED device is the easy part — using it in a way that actually earns its spot on your shelf is where most people go wrong. The good news: done properly, a session takes about five minutes. Here is the exact routine we walk clients through at the clinic, mistake list included.
Before you start: two non-negotiables
- Clean skin. Cleanse and pat dry — no makeup, no SPF residue.
- A water-based serum or gel. Microcurrent needs it to conduct, and it is what lets the head glide instead of drag. A hydrating serum is perfect; anything oil-based is not (oil blocks conductivity).
The 5-minute routine, step by step
- Prep with the absorption mode. If your device has a prep mode (on ours it is called Air Shot), run it first over clean skin — it is designed to ready the skin and enhance absorption of the serum you apply next.
- Apply your serum generously. A thin, even layer over one section of the face at a time. If the device starts to drag, add more — drag means the current is not conducting properly.
- Work upward, section by section. Place the treatment head flush against the skin — the whole surface touching, at a low angle — and glide slowly upward: jawline toward the ear, cheek toward the cheekbone, brow toward the hairline. Slow beats fast; three to five passes per area is plenty.
- Choose your mode for the day. You do not need every mode every session. Alternate — for example the elasticity-support mode one day, the microcurrent lift mode the next, the contour-sculpting mode after that. Start on a low intensity and only step up when a level feels like nothing.
- Stop when the timer says stop. Good devices have a smart timer (ours runs five minutes) precisely because more is not better. Finish with your usual moisturiser — and SPF if it is daytime.
The mistakes that quietly cancel your results
- Dry-skin sessions. No serum, no conduction — you are just massaging your face with an expensive wand.
- Tip-only contact. Pointing the head at the skin instead of laying it flush dramatically reduces contact — flat and flush, always.
- Downward or scrubbing strokes. The habit is slow, upward, one direction.
- Marathon sessions, rarely. Consistency is the entire game: five minutes most days will always beat an occasional half hour.
- Ignoring the exclusions. Skip microcurrent if you are pregnant or have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device — and ask your doctor first if you are unsure.
When in-clinic treatments can help
Think of the device as your between-visit habit. When laxity or texture needs more than maintenance, in-clinic options such as radiofrequency skin tightening work at a depth no home device reaches — and at a consultation our registered-nurse-led team will show you the correct home technique for your face shape while we are at it. Results vary between individuals.
